A group of American
pro-lifers, guided by Emily
Faulkner (23) and Nathan Berning (25), travelled from the US to lend
their support to the anti-abortion cause in the referendum on the 8th
Amendment that will take place in Ireland on
May 25th. The group is called “Let ThemLive.org” and
is connected to “The Leadership
Institute”, a conservative organisation founded in Virginia in 1979 by the
Republican leader Morton C. Blackwell. Emily Faulkner has released an exclusive
interview to “La Croce quotidiano” explaining why “Let ThemLive” came to Ireland and why they wanted to influence the
referendum.
Emily, When
and Why did you become a prolife activist?
I became a pro-life activist when I was in my second year in college.
Although I grew up in a pro-life family, I never fully understood what it meant
to be pro-life. I started a pro-life
group at Colorado State University where I went to college. That is how I got
into pro-life activism. I am pro-life because I did a lot of research on the
issue and decided that human life begins at conception. My background is in biology and science
supports the pro-life position, so it was pretty logical to be pro-life!
Could you explain us what do you mean when you say
that the anti-abortion stance is not primarily based on religious faith but rather on science?
I definitely believe that a lot of religious people are anti-abortion
because of their faith. I am a Catholic and that also shapes my beliefs. I
believe biology and embryology are just a great way to show when life begins
and to show that even the unborn child in the womb is a human being with equal
rights.
Why did “LetThemLive.org” decide to travel from the US
to Ireland in the imminence of the May 25th referendum?
Abortion is an international human rights issue and so it was an easy
decision to make to come to Ireland to share our knowledge of abortion.
Do you think that all the anti-abortion organisations
of the West should collaborate to support the cause of the integrity and
Sanctity of Innocent Human Life?
I fully believe all pro-life organizations should come together to defend
the unborn. We are all fighting to protect the right to life of the unborn and
the pro-life movement could be very, very strong if we all collaborated.
In Ireland leading clinicians say that Eighth Amendment
has created legal uncertainty. What do you reply them?
Physicians worldwide are supposed to provide lifesaving care. As someone
who wants to become a doctor, I believe I will have the responsibility to save
lives and never take lives. The 8th
Amendment has never prevented leading obstetricians and gynaecologists from
practicing medicine and caring for women. There was a statement released by 5
obstetricians and gynaecologists who are all former chairmen of the Institute
of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists that said they have never been prevented
from providing care. I have attached
that statement for you!
Less than 3 weeks left, a new poll by Millward Brown
shows that the NO abortion vote has risen by 10%, while the YES vote has fallen
by a massive 18%. What about the situation now? Do you think we really can “Savethe8th”!
I think everyone is doing everything they can at this point in regards to
the pro-life movement in Ireland. I believe Ireland is a pro-life nation that
will continues to protect the unborn in the womb!
Could you tell us an anecdote from your prolife campaign
in Dublin?
My team and I were passing out literature about when life begins and some
characteristics of an unborn fetus at 12 weeks and I had really great
interactions with the Irish people. They
are very eager to learn about the development of the fetus in the womb and are
surprised that a fetus at 12 weeks has detectable brain waves and can even
hiccup!
